BLOGNine Digital Transformation Thought-Starters

Is your digital transformation effort driven by a “let’s-install-this-shiny-software” mindset, rather than a “let’s-drive-ROI” one? (Of course not!)

Nine Digital Transformation Thought-Starters

One of the more powerful ways to make sure that any transformation effort actually does drive ROI is to use a powerful analytical process: Journey Mapping.

Yet even when doing this, Journey Mapping often stops short of driving real opportunity.

Here are nine journey mapping thought-starters that can help focus any digital transformation process:

  1. How might digital be used to speed up the ______ process?
  2. How might digital be used to re-engineer (or remove) this process completely?
  3. How might digital be used to improve internal efficiency by automating repetitive manual steps?
  4. How might digital be used to “go paperless”? Or to improve the ability for self-service, for those who want it?
  5. How might digital be used to extend the reach, increase internal efficiency or improve the effectiveness of existing initiatives?
  6. How might digital be used to forge partnerships, white-label intellectual property, or earn referral revenue?
  7. How might digital be used to directly reduce costs at any point in the [prospect or client] journey?
  8. How might the opportunity of digital directly impact the organization’s strategy?
  9. How might digital be used to empower each person to connect with – or share their experience with – others?

These thought-starters provide a glimpse as to where a digital ROI can be found. They also open the door to improved internal efficiencies, an improved touchpoint experience, and a competitive advantage against “free” alternatives and new competitors.

From a practical perspective, journey mapping prioritizes how and what gets transformed. It is no longer about the color used within the website, but rather about the supporting infrastructure and process changes that can deliver external value – and competitive differentiation.

This week’s action plan:

Have any of these questions NOT been asked recently? This week, put this list on your agenda to find out. (Job one, of course, is completing a formal journey mapping process.)

AI insight: Yes, AI is a game-changer, but beyond experimentation and discovery, transformation will only be stronger when viewed through a journey-mapping lens.
