Have you ever spent time with some colleagues talking about the good old days? Perhaps wishing that someone you worked with was still part of the team? Or maybe wishing that the old bonus plan was still in place?
Many people do this from time to time, but it is a terrible waste of effort, for one simple reason: It keeps your focus squarely in the rear-view mirror, and keeps your eye off the opportunities of today.
In fact, consider that during the “good old days”, there were likely people doing exactly what you are doing today: thinking that the current times are terrible, and the “old old” days were filled with glory.
So why do we sometimes look backwards? We are all proud of our accomplishments, and it is only natural – especially when faced with today’s difficult challenges.
The next time you think about the good old days, remember that you are living in them exactly now: you’ll only recognize it sometime in the future. The key is to make sure that you are successful today – so when you look back, these indeed will be the good old days.
Consider the challenges you are currently facing; which one of them will make you most proud, sometime in the future? This week, focus on moving it forward.
