Summer Vacation

The month of July is special, as it is the month when many people traditionally take their vacations. But it is special for another reason as well: it is the half-way point of the year. And while we might prefer to be sipping lemonade at the beach, it is a useful time to look at our progress as well.

Consider these three questions:

  • Am I happy with the progress that I am making this year on the job?
  • Am I spending as much time on “balance” activities as I would like?
  • Have I completed half of any personal objectives that I set for myself?

For many people, the year goes by without even a passing consideration to their progress towards their personal or professional goals. Thinking about them half-way through the year gives you a chance to re-commit to them, or change them.

This week’s action item: Go through your notes, your personnel reviews and your calendar, looking for the goals you had previously committed to. If some of them need to be changed, then change them. But more importantly, plan how these goals will be achieved during the next six months. Once this is done, you can truly enjoy your vacation.
